Byers Sets New Single-Season Rushing Mark
Virginia Union University's Jada Byers rushed for 109 yards to set a new single-season rushing record, but Chowan University spoiled VUU's perfect season by upsetting the Panthers 26-21 on Saturday, October 29, at Willie Lanier Field at Hovey Stadium in Richmond, Va.
Byers now has 1,669 yards on the season, eclipsing the previous record of 1,660 set by Andre Braxton in the 2000 season.
VUU's Jahkari Grant completed 17 of 26 passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns.
Virginia Union's Armonii Burden returned a fumble 65 yards for another Panther touchdown in the game.
"Beyond the loss, I'm still very proud of my team," said VUU Head Football Coach Dr. Alvin Parker. "We had our chances but didn't capitalize and Chowan made some timely plays. Hats off to them for the victory."
Virginia Union will wrap up the 2022 regular season when it travels to Petersburg, Va., to face Virginia State University at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5.
