Mallory Leads #1 R-MC Men’s Hoops past Randolph

 Senior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had 23 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Randolph 91-74 on Sunday afternoon in the ODAC opener for both teams.

The Basics:

Records: R-MC 4-1, 1-0 ODAC; Randolph 3-4, 0-1 ODAC

How it Happened:

  • Junior Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) hit a free throw to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets before the WildCats scored eight straight to go up 8-1 two minutes into the contest. Mallory had a layup and foul shot followed by a bucket in the paint by Mbangue to make it a two-point game at 8-6. Randolph pushed the lead to eight before a steal and dunk by freshman Bryce Scott (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) capped a 6-2 spurt as R-MC pulled within four at 23-19 with 10:40 left in the first half. The WildCats put up the next five to stretch the lead to nine at 28-19 before a layup by Mallory ended a 15-5 run as the Yellow Jackets reclaimed the lead at 34-33 with 2:45 remaining. A 15-footer by senior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) with 56 seconds left tied the score at 40-40 for the half. Mallory had 19 points in the first half and scored 12 of the final 16 points for the Yellow Jackets in the period.
  • Mbangue sank two free throws and a Talbert layup gave the home team a quick 44-40 lead one minute into the second half. After two foul shots by Randolph, Mallory made a layup and Talbert swished two free throws to make it 48-42 with 17:05 left in the period. The WildCats closed to within two at 53-51 a follow by freshman Keishawn Pulley Jr. (Louisa, Va./St. Christopher's), a three-pointer by freshman Kyle Keener (Canton, Ga./Sequoyah) and a jumper by Pulley gave the Yellow Jackets a 60-51 advantage with 13:15 remaining. Randolph cut the deficit to five before Talbert had two layups in an 8-0 run as R-MC went up 70-57 with 7:50 left. Two buckets by the WildCats trimmed the lead to nine before a triple by Pulley capped a 13-2 spurt to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 83-63 with 2:40 remaining. R-MC would record a 91-74 victory.
By The Numbers:

  • R-MC has won nine straight against Randolph.
  • The Yellow Jackets had five score in double figures. Along with 23 by Mallory, Talbert matched his season high with 16, Pulley poured in 12, Mbangue added 11 and sophomore Vincent Payne (Frederick, Md./St. Maria Goretti) scored a season-high 11.
  • Mallory went 10 for 13 from the floor and hit his lone three-point attempt.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 37-30 edge on the glass. Mallory had 10 boards and Mbangue grabbed eight.
  • Mallory recorded three blocked shots.
  • Talbert and Pulley both had four assists.
  • Talbert and Mbangue both had three steals.
  • R-MC had a 48-16 edge for points in the paint and 38-6 advantage on bench points.
For The Record:

  • R-MC tied the program record with its 50th consecutive home victory.
  • The Yellow Jackets recorded their highest point total of the season.
